Great question! I thought deeply about the question while preparing for the Beauty Wisdom Webinar, hosted by Holly Bilicki, launching live (and free!) on April 3.

To me, being beautiful includes an enthusiasm for life and a glow which is hard to miss. Beauty equals that sparkle in the eyes, the warmth of a genuine laugh. Remember that high school cheerleader whom we all thought was the most beautiful girl in the world? She expressed boundless energy with clear, shiny skin. The truth is, we are hard-wired to be attracted to healthy, happy people.

What makes you feel beautiful?

I feel beautiful when I feel good! My dermatologist, Dr. Julia T. Hunter, says that skin care products or procedures cannot create real beauty when people are in pain, struggling with fatigue or a bloated belly. Do you remember the last time you felt sexy? I will bet it wasn’t when your stomach was killing you or you were nursing a migraine. No matter what Victoria’s Secret wants us to believe, beauty is an inside job.

Depending on severity and impact, managing stress might be first on your list. The best diet in the world can not be an antidote to the physical and emotional assault of severe, persistent stress. I say that humbly, with my lifetime of experience of taking on too much stress. They ask what supplements I throw into my smoothie, how much juice I drink, and …  Am I a vegetarian? I do the same with people who look and feel healthy. I want to know their secrets, too! So, I am launching into 2017 by sharing my “Most Valuable Players” in what I eat and drink, my favorite supplements, vitamins and protein powders. Not all of them may be right for you. I work with a brilliant medical doctor, Dr. Julia T. Hunter, who guides my choices. Blood tests can provide valuable information, but Dr. Hunter doesn’t limit her information-gathering to blood tests alone. The bottom line is, how I feel. That should be your bottom line, too. Alkalize with Lemon Juice & Water

The first thing I do mornings is to drink some lemon juice in water–about 4-6 ounces. About 20 minutes later, I make my morning breakfast smoothie. I take two big scoops of Metagenics brand “Ultra Clear” and add it to a glass of water. That’s it–no frozen fruit or greens. I have always liked it that way. Simple. And fast. Then it’s vitamin supplements time.

Wheatgrass is My High

An hour later, I drink eight ounces of wheatgrass juice. A habit for 35 years, I love the blast of energy it gives. Are you one of those people who can’t stomach solid food in the morning? I am. Protein smoothies and juices are perfect for me. On the other hand, my kids have always loved breakfasts with oatmeal, eggs and sausage, but sometimes they opt for smoothies, too. However, they make theirs with frozen bananas, strawberries, mangos, and protein powder.

Yes, I eat solid food! In the afternoon, I enjoy wild salmon with a salad or broiled chicken. In the afternoon, I like to consume another protein drink. I also like “E3Live,” which is a blue-green algae drink that you can buy frozen and to be ready whenever you want it. It is  terrific if fresh juice is scarce. My nephews keep some on hand in their freezer at college, where staying healthy and eating clean is a challenge.

Nursing a Sore Throat: Could it be a strep Throat Diagnosis?

Diagnosis Unknown: “I’m not sure, but Could this be the Bubonic Plague?”

My daughter, Hana, came down with a severe sore throat this week. Her lymph glands were swollen and her head hurt. Since her brother, Luke, experienced the same symptoms recently which brought a strep throat diagnosis, we headed off the to local med center for a test.

After a long wait, the doctor finally appeared, handsome and silver-haired, looking like a star of a network medical series. With a 30-second evaluation, he said, “With throat, red and tonsils enlarged, I would say my diagnosis is probably strep. I’ll just write a prescription for antibiotics, which should clear it up in three to five days.”

To Bomb or Not to Bomb (with Antibiotics)

“Would you please test her for strep?” I asked. “I’d rather not give her antibiotics if she doesn’t need them.”

“Sure,” he said, sticking a long swab in Hana’s mouth. About 15 minutes later, he came back into the room.

“It’s negative,” he said, looking a bit disappointed.

“Good news,” I offered.

“Well … yes and no,” he doctor went on. “Sometimes it’s easier to get rid of these bugs when you know what they are. If it’s not strep, it could be mono.”

“Have you had mono?” he asked Hana.

“No, I haven’t,” she said, looking worried.

“You’re at the age for it–between 13 and 21. I’ve seen kids with Mono down with it  for two months.”

Hana was getting paler by the moment. She had not planned to spend the entire winter in bed.

“Thanks for the information,” I said, wanting to get out of there as soon as possible. “I’ll keep an eye on her.” As we headed out, he pressed the script into my hand. He meant no harm, but I was angry about his casual and irresponsible remarks.

On the way home, Hana said, “Mom, do you think I have mono?”

“No,” I said, “I really do not. Mono exhibits many symptoms you do not have–like a high fever and exhaustion. You attended school today from 8 to 5, and probably could not have done that with a case of mono.”

 I scheduled a lymphatic session for Hana that afternoon, and she was 90% better the next day.

Do No Harm

Dr. Dave Cumes, M.D. would call the doctor’s suggestion of mono, a “nocebo,” the opposite of a “placebo.” A placebo is a substance or action with a positive effect because the person believes it will help. A “nocebo” is a negative phrase that can have a negative effect, sometimes a powerful one. Dramatic examples of nocebos are: “You have three months to live, or “You will never have children.”

Nocebos are sometimes delivered for legal reasons. Dr. Cumes says, as doctors are under pressure to tell what they believe is the “whole truth.” But Dr. Cumes reminds us, no one knows the future. For a profession whose motto is “do no harm,” well-intentioned doctors deliver thousands of nocebos daily, without substantial evidence to ground them in fact. Consequently, our brains can take these suggestions very seriously.

Nocebo or Placebo Diagnosis?

Today at work, my client, Rosie, 35 with brain cancer, was sharing a recent visit to her neurologist. They were discussing her CT scan, delighted to discover  that her new chemotherapy protocol was effective.

“Well, the tumors are definitely smaller. But, just to let you know, the tumors could return someday. And, it’s possible that down the road, you’ will contract Multiple Sclerosis,” the doctor said.

“Why would you say that? I haven’t had any positive tests for MS,” Rosie asked. Since she’s been battling brain cancer for two years, and is finally getting better, the news of another serious illness knocked the wind out of her.

“Well, you have seizures,” the doctor offered his diagnosis. “That’s one of the symptoms of MS.”

“And I have epilepsy, which could also explain my seizures,” Rosie said.

“That could be. But, I just don’t want to shock you if you develop Multiple Sclerosis in a few years,” he repeated. Rosie is a strong young woman, but left her doctor’s office devastated. As a result, we spent an hour processing her feelings, until we could laugh instead of cry about it. I wondered, why the doctor had not suggested that after the tumors had healed, she had a good chance of leading a happy, healthy life? Because that was at least as true as the possibility of her tumors returning, or getting another disease.

Negative Diagnosis

Has a doctor or health practitioner ever suggested you have a serious illness without facts or foundation? As a result, how did you feel? Don’t worry, if you were sad, angry, or confused, you aren’t crazy! Unknowingly, your doctor was delivering a nocebo, the most dangerous pill of all! However, naming it takes some of its power away–which is as important as anything else we can do for our health and well-being.

After I lost my first baby at 14 weeks, I could not understand why could some women had babies so easily, but not me? I felt sad and angry. The first step in healing was to embrace this challenge the way Spirit chose to “come get me.” I took the opportunity to transform my mind and body before becoming a parent. Certainly, conscious parenting requires we be our very best selves: healthy, brave, patient, responsible and strong. I was lucky to find a guide–the late Niravi Payne, one of the pioneers of the mind/body movement in fertility. She was the founder of the Whole Person Fertility Program; and loves working with women and couples who wanted babies. She appreciates that no other group is as determined and committed to personal growth.

Dumping the Toxins, Physical & Emotional

During my work with Ms. Payne, I explored family patterns. Together, we explored my unhealthy ways of relating to others, including myself. Preventing me from having a baby, they also kept me stuck in every area of life. Sharing tools that I learned is exciting. Happily, these tools can serve you whether or not you carry your own child, use a surrogate, adopt, or otherwise. Keep in mind, becoming a mother does not mean just giving birth. It means becoming the healthiest, most aware woman possible. Therefore, you are making yourself ready to consistently love, the greatest gift on earth — a child.

Tools to Support the Fertility Journey

  1. Cleansing the body. First, I implemented a juice fast with green vegetable juices and colonics. Next, I moved to a nutrient-dense diet, rich in natural fats, clean, organic proteins and bio-available vitamins. And finally, blasting the belief that fats are bad, and will make you fat, was key. Babies’ brains need fat.
  2. Bio-feedback. I had always thought of myself as easy-going. But through bio-feedback, I learned that I tend to carry a great amount of somatic stress. Surprisingly, just like my dad, I internalized stress and was unaware of it. Consequently, we both experienced the same heath issues. Stress makes the body acidic. Through bio-feedback, Consequently, I learned to identify the stress and release it. I learned that brain training, such as EMDR, or neural training, is a powerful tool to help the body and mind handle stress.
  3. Acupuncture. Luckily, I worked with an acupuncturist who specialized in fertility issues. She was present at Luke’s birth and saved me when it came to “back labor.”
  4. Family Patterns & Emotional Release Work. Niravi’s work uncovers toxic family patterns. Such patterns create issues from infertility to illness. They can span from physical disease to problems with career and relationships. Niravi teaches a safe and effective way to release patterns from the brain and body. Find this training  through The Hoffman Institute in Northern California.

Are you one of those people who can “eat anything”? You may have never considered that your digestion is actually playing havoc with your emotions. Let me ask you this: Do you crave sugar? Do you live on carbs? Do you go long periods of time without eating? Do you experience mood swings? If you answer “yes” to even one of these questions, your digestion will become stressed, which affect your mood and your emotional stability.

Here are the keys to mental health, by creating a healthy gut, and therefore, a healthy brain:

Keys to Healing the Gut/Brain Connection

  1. Take a digestive enzyme with HCL during or right after meals. No one over forty who takes medicines, or experiences sustained stress, produces enough HCL. If your food is not breaking down, it rots in the stomach and ferments in the gut. This leads to blood sugar crashes, fatigue, depression. and a decrease in serotonin.
  2. Get 100 grams of digestible protein daily. Non-sugar, non-dairy protein shakes have 20 grams per serving. A small slice of chicken, fish or beef has 30 grams. Protein is the antidote to sugar cravings. Many people who struggle with substance issues are likely to experience sugar and carbohydrate addictions. The crash from sugar and carbohydrates signals the brain for either more sugar, or a stronger substance–such as drugs and alcohol, to feel good again.
  3. Alkalize. Go green with freeze-dried greens in smoothies or on their own, at least once a day, to supplement fresh vegetable juices. Going green will improve your mental health.
  4. Cleanse the colon with colonics and coffee enemas, to flush toxins from the liver. An impacted colon will prevent the liver from adequately flushing. Toxins may return to the blood stream, called “auto-intoxication.” This is one of the reasons why success rates in recovery are so low. Toxic substances are being re-circulated and cravings follow along with pain, headaches, and anxiety. The problem is not one of “will power.” This is a physiological problem solved by cleansing these toxic substances from the body.

Cleansing = Healing

How do we do begin to heal the gut? We cleanse! The 21-Day Cleanse outlined in my books eliminates foods and substances most challenging to the gut and immune system. These include sugar, wheat, dairy, processed fats, and junk food, alcohol, coffee, and soda. My cleanse permits unlimited amounts of delicious, nutrient-rich foods such organic vegetables, clean organic proteins such as eggs, fish and chicken, as well as fresh vegetable juices, protein-packed smoothies. The antidote to a “sugar-jones” is digestible protein. I teach the fast and easy snacks to reach for when cravings occur. No one goes hungry on this cleanse!

We are lucky to live in a democracy with the opportunity to listen to other viewpoints and share our own. When in my 20’s, I heard comedian and activist Dick Gregory speak at Harvard. He said that the most revolutionary action we can take is be healthy and support others to do the same. Need digestive relief? You did not intend to indulge in two deserts and a glass of wine. Or that cheeseburger. Or a whole bag of chips with salsa. Your stomach hurts, your belly is bloated, and your head aches. Now you need digestive relief, and fast! We all blow it occasionally. No matter how “clean” we eat at home, it’s hard to stay on a lifestyle plan when everyone around is celebrating with party foods. And, as next weekend is Labor Day, we will be tempted at every turn–picnics, bar-b-ques, weddings, street fairs. The list goes on!

Speaking Up is Better than Throwing Up!

Some of us do not do well with enforcing boundaries. Yesterday, one of my clients told me that when visiting her mom, she avoids hurting feelings by passing up the meatloaf and gravy, even though it turns her gut inside out. We talked about how positive it would be for her if she discussed her new diet with her mom before her next trip home. That way, no one will be surprised and her mom will not take her food choices personally. Make your motto, “Inform, inform, inform.”

Preparation is well and good, but let’s get back to those deserts we didn’t intend to eat. What can we do about that? Below are simple tools that will fast-forward you to digestive relief.

  1. Food enzymes. Your belly’s best friend are digestive enzymes. Make sure they have hydrochloric acid in them and take them when you eat, or shortly after. I never leave home without mine.
  2. Standard Process. “Antronex.” Antronex is a beef liver extract that has saved my liver and gall bladder countless times. The first time I used it, I had eaten a salad with rancid dressing at a restaurant. I felt awful, with stabbing gut pains and terrible gas. My chiropractor handed me a bottle of Antronex; I took three and felt better in two hours.
  3. Charcoal. Charcoal absorbs toxins, and is excellent to take in any situation where there is digestive stress. Here in Santa Barbara, Pressed Juicery makes a drink with charcoal that my clients adore.
  4. Baking Soda. A teaspoon of baking soda in a few ounces of water will alkalize the gut and help absorb stomach acids.
  5. Homeopathy. Nux vomica is excellent for nausea and hangovers. Arsenicum Album is helpful for stomach pain, gas and bloating.

Natural Soothing Elixirs

Ginger and chamomile tea are soothing elixirs, as is a a drop of peppermint oil in water. However, if you are experiencing food poisoning symptoms, go to the Emergency Room for IV fluids and anti-nausea medicine. After that, take plenty of electrolytes, salt and rest. It takes 48 hours to recover from food poisoning.

Six Natural Ways to Heal Bladder or Yeast Infections!

Yeast infections and bladder infections. No one wants to talk about them. Once they become infected with one, it becomes a primary topic of conversation. Anyone who has experienced these, know they are painful, inconvenient, and distracting. Left untreated, bladder infections can lead to kidney infections. Yeast infections can become systemic, causing rashes, allergies and breakdown the immune system. Nothing can ruin summer lovin’ or a summer vacation faster than one of these two demons. This article gives some tried and true remedies for these malicious maladies.

Bladder Infections Burn!

How do you know if you have a bladder infection? You will feel burning when you pee and you need to pee often. Occasionally, someone will experience a bladder infection without the burn, with frequent urination. These are caused by bacteria in the bladder. A safe and inexpensive way to test for a bladder infection is to buy a home diagnostic test kit. Kits are available at any health food or drug store for under $15. If your test kit shows you with even a slight bladder infection, these remedies work:

  1. Cranberry extract capsules. more effective than cranberry juice, with no added sugar.
  2. D-Mannose Powder. This is a naturally occurring simple sugar that is metabolized in small amounts by the body, with the remainder excreted into the urine. D-Mannose interferes with particle attachment, and allows everything to be flushed out in the urine stream, and has been proven to help maintain a healthy urinary tract.
  3. Dr. Richard Schulze’s Kidney-Bladder tincture. This is an organic herbal tincture containing uva ursi and powerful cleansing herbs designed to heal the bladder and kidneys. Excellent preventative for anyone dealing with chronic bladder infections. Available at herbdoc.com or 1-800-herbdoc. Dr. Schulze also makes a Kidney-Bladder tea.

Check your acid/alkaline balance with a pH strip, as acidity contributes to bladder and yeast infections. Drink plenty of water, and, while you are healing. Add fresh, green juices to your diet, and avoid sugar, coffee, alcohol and all processed foods.

These remedies should shift your symptoms in 24-48 hours. If you have a fever, are pregnant, or if your symptoms increase, seek medical advice.  Some bladder infections and all kidney infections need to be treated with antibiotics.

Yeast Infections Itch!

You have contracted a yeast or candida infection if your lady parts itch, burn, feel uncomfortable or excrete an unusual odor or discharge. Other symptoms include rashes, gas, bloating, headaches, body aches, depression and anxiety. Yeast infections are caused by an imbalance in intestinal flora. Often triggered by antibiotics, stress can make the body vulnerable to yeast infections. Sex with a new partner or soaking in a hot tub can trigger flair ups. Remedies that will calm the itch and heal the immune system are listed below:

  1. Eliminate Toxins. Dump sugar, yeast, wheat, vinegar, alcohol, processed foods, coffee and soda! Yeast thrives on these substances. See the Candida chapter in my book, It Takes Guts To Be Happy! A 21-Day Cleansing Plan to Heal Your Belly & Recharge Your Life.
  2. Herbal Cleanses. Buy a candida cleanse formula at the local health food store. Take it for 30 days. Find products that contain pao d’ arco, garlic and grapefruit seed extract. Diet alone does not always heal a yeast infection or candida imbalance.
  3. Herbal Products. The herbal product mentioned above, Dr. Schulze’s Kidney-Bladder Tincture, is excellent for yeast infections.
  4. Probiotics. Take probiotics daily.
  5. Suppositories. Douche with 1 tbsp pure borax and 2 drops of tea tree oil. You can also buy a homeopathic product called Yeast Arrest in suppository form.
  6. Garlic. Add fresh garlic to your salads.

It is true. You can loose weight by using proper food combining! Do you burp, belch and lament your bloated belly? Are you frustrated over that ten pounds that will not come off? Are you exhausted an hour after you eat? Food combining may be your magic bullet.

Ten thousand years ago, we became farmers. For the 900,000 years prior to farming, 99% of our evolution–we were hunter/gatherers. In the mornings, we might have eaten berries, nuts or fruit. For dinner, we may have nibbled on seeds or wild greens. If hunters among us were lucky, we might feast on a small piece of fish, a wild egg, or a bird. Only in the latest one percent of evolution did unhealthy food combinations become possible through farming, ranching, and food storage options. Consuming meat, beans, rice, salad, and fruit at the same meal seems “normal” to us, but bio-genetically, healthy food combining is the rule. Based on how humans ate as we evolved, Dr. Howard Hay developed the concept of healthy food combining in the 1930’s. However, proper food combining is actually an ancient science.

The ABC’s of Food Enzymes

To digest carbohydrates, we need the enzyme amylase, made in our saliva, to pre-digest food while in the mouth. In order to digest protein, we need hydrochloric acid, or HCL, produced in the stomach. The saliva in our mouth thins when we eat protein in order for it to get into the stomach efficiently. If we eat proteins and carbohydrates together, as in the classic meal of pasta with meat sauce, or eggs and toast, we create a digestive disaster.

When these two food groups mix together, stomach acids work on protein, but the carbohydrates start to ferment. Heartburn, belching, and gas starts here. Blood sugar crashes and food is not broken down and assimilated into the body. Instead it begins to ferment like alcohol in the gut.

What Is Leaky Gut?

Meanwhile, the protein is beginning to rot and the carbohydrates are putrefying. Next comes stomach aches, constipation, indigestion, acid reflux, and allergies. Why allergies? When undigested food passes through the bowel skin into the blood and lymph system, it turns into a toxic substance that the body cannot recognize, use, or flush out. This condition is called leaky gut.

When using proper food combing, you allow your digestive system to work the way nature intended. Thoughtful food combining speeds up your metabolism and pounds will melt. Homemade salad dressings are to salad what cinnamon & nutmeg are to pumpkin pie–everything! Bottled salad dressings have come far from sugary brands we slathered on chunks of iceberg when I was a kid. But store-bought brands can not compete with the fresh food, zesty taste of homemade dressings. Most bottled dressings use low quality oils and are high in salt with hidden sugars. If one of your goals is losing weight, forget it! You may say, “Homemade sounds great, but who has time? I barely have time to shred lettuce and toss in a few veggies.”

Fresh Food Salad Dressings Are Fast & Easy to MakeOlive Oil,Salad Dressing And Vinegar for fresh food options

Good news! I make our family’s all-time favorite salad dressing in under 90 seconds! Use fresh lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper (we also add Herbamare, a wonderful European spice). I prefer lemon juice over vinegar, for both taste and alkalinity. If you want to drop pounds, stick to a light, clean dressing like that. It is also fun to mix up with a variety of organic oils, such as avocado and walnut.

You might crave a salad dressing at times, which can turn raw, crunchy veggies into a complete meal. Because they contain some protein, salads or veggies with fresh food dressings will carry you through a busy day, a workout, or a long meeting. Below I share some taste-proven recipes that will make your mouth water, and your gut, happy. These recipes are tailored for one-two people, so be sure to double or triple if feeding a group.

Get wild and creative with spicy greens like arugula, soft greens such as butter lettuce, and combinations of greens, such as spinach, sunflower seed spouts, and romaine. Because of the abundance of greens, grated carrots & beets add color, contrast, and sweetness. Nori slices add a salty crunch. Steamed, broiled or sautéed veggie leftovers, are also a delicious addition–especially grilled onions and red pepper. We can all get into a rut with salad-making. Therefore, with the abundance of organic veggies available in summer, it is the best time to experiment with fresh food tastes and textures. Bon apetit!


Avocado Salsa Lime

Ingredients

  • 2 avocados
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (lemon works, too!)
  • sprinkle of cayenne pepper
  • minced garlic
  • salt & pepper
  • 1-2 chopped tomatoes

Instructions

Blend all ingredients, except the tomatoes…stir those in before serving.


Creamy Tahini

Ingredients

  • Juice of one large lemon
  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup raw tahini
  • 1 tsp agave
  • 1 and ½ tsp Bragg’s amino seasoning
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 2 tbsp hempseed oil or olive oil
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp raw sesame seeds

Instructions

Combine lemon juice, garlic and water into a blender and puree for 15 – 30 seconds. Next, add all remaining ingredients and puree again until smooth. Enjoy!


Spicy Pumpkin Seed Dressing

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup green (hulled) pumpkin seeds (not roasted; 2 1/4 oz) or pine nuts (2 1/2 oz)
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro

Instructions

Blend till creamy and serve. Pumpkin seeds are packed with vitamins and minerals; with a sweet, nutty taste.

The slow cooker is an essential and practical cooking tool for the non-chef. One of the most important questions asked on the summer Happy-Gut Makeover teleconference call this week was, “What can I make for lunch and dinner which is tasty, healthy, and fast?”

Great question! My mouth began to water while talking about lettuce-wrapped chicken with fresh dill, almond butter on apple slices; and my new favorite, sardines with lemon and wild greens. When I suggested a thermos of home-made chicken soup or creamy split pea, someone laughingly remarked, “Who has time to make foods like that?” My answer: no one–unless they are best friends with a slow cooker.

Even though we often associate the slow cooker (otherwise known as a crock pot) with winter comfort-foods, this tool is fabulous for saving time in the summer when we would rather be playing than cooking. What is the key to enjoying any healthy diet without succumbing to unhealthy snacks because you left home empty-handed? The perfect defense is a great offense–which involves making meal-time prep and production fast and easy. Below are two slow cooker recipes that will please your taste buds and take less than ten minutes to make. I often put all the ingredients in the slow cooker before bed. Then, like magic, we wake up to ready-made lunches and satisfying dinners.

Heavenly Split Pea Soup

  • 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and medium dice
  • 2 medium celery stalks, medium dice
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, medium dice
  • 1-2 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 fresh parsley sprigs
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 cups (1 quart) low-sodium organic chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbs Kosher or Himalayan Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly ground black pepper

Pour rinsed split peas into slow cooker, and layer all other ingredients over them. Cook on “low” for 8-12 hours. Enjoy!


Coconut Cashew Curry Chicken

Curried Coconut Chicken with red pepper and rice

Ingredients:

  • 3-4  organic boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 small red potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ½ white or yellow onion, chopped

Sauce:

  • 2 cups organic chicken broth
  • 2 cups unsweetened coconut milk (or one 14-oz can + ½ cup chicken broth)
  • 3 tablespoons red or yellow curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS: Add chicken pieces, red peppers, potatoes, and onions to the slow cooker. In a medium bowl whisk together chicken broth, curry powder, cumin, salt, and cayenne pepper. Pour mixture into slow cooker and stir to coat chicken and veggies. Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours or on low 4-6 hours.

Prior (10-15 minutes) to serving, stir in the coconut milk. Stir just before serving and top with cashews and freshly chopped cilantro.

All that is needed to complete the perfect picnic, office lunch or sunset dinner on-the-go are containers of chopped summer veggies: sliced red peppers, zucchini sticks, summer squash, cucumbers and carrots with dips & dressing of hummus, tahini and feta cheese. Yum. Who’s suffering on this cleanse? Not us!

Superbugs: The Best Defense is a Gut Offense!

Superbugs are antibiotic-resistant bacteria and they are making the news. Department of Defense researchers announced last month that they identified an antibiotic-resistant strain of E. Coli in the urine of a Pennsylvania woman. The E. Coli bacteria contained a gene known as MCR-1.

Superbugs have evolved in part, from an overuse of antibiotics; and colistin is a popular last-resort antibiotic to kill superbugs. Although antibiotics are living organisms, scientists did not expect colistin, a super antibiotic, to encounter such resistance. But with the emergence of MCR-1 genes in human and animal bacteria, this has changed. Colistin has no power against bacteria armed with MCR-1 genes. With this news, bacteria has unofficially moved to the superbug level!

Superbugs are a huge problem. According to Vox, an American news website,”In the United States alone, antibiotic resistant infections are now associated with 23,000 deaths and 2 million illnesses every year. By 2050, a UK report suggested drug-resistant infections will kill more people than cancer.”

Why Do Superbugs Exist?

The liberal use of antibiotics in the meat industry has accelerated the growth of superbugs. Eighty percent of United States antibiotics are used on livestock. You may think, I never take antibiotics!  However, if you eat conventional poultry or meat, you do consume them. North Carolina farm animals consume more of these drugs than all Americans combined, reports say.

Fortune Magazine reports that this problem is as critical as climate change. The Center for Disease Control says, “It is the end of the road for antibiotics unless we act urgently.” What does “act urgently” mean? We can hope that Big Pharma directs their resources towards creating new antibiotics. However, this is not lucrative like making new vaccines–a billion-dollar industry with precious little regulation. In this country, it is easier to bring a vaccine to market than an antibiotic. I would not bet my life on this waiting game.

It’s All About the Gut!

Eighty percent of the immune system is in the gut. Immunity, health and happiness, is dependent on how vital and clean the gut is. A healthy gut is resistant to superbugs, viruses, stress, and environmental toxicity. A yeast-ridden gut holding twenty pounds of old feces is a breeding ground for superbugs.

  • Towels for the floor or Blue Pads (like puppy pee pads) available at the drug store
  • Electrolytes and probiotics
  • Option: wheat grass for implant following your enema
  • Essential oils, such as roman chamomile, or Liquid Trace Minerals

In a pinch, you can use freshly-brewed organic coffee from a coffee maker for your enema, but it is not optimal as it is highly acidic. Acid is one of the things we are trying to reduce in our bodies. Dr. Max Gerson, founder of the famed Gerson Clinic and the father of coffee enemas, recommends using organic, green (unroasted), due to its low acid and high caffeine levels, boiled and strained. It is available online. You can also use regular, ground organic coffee, boiled for five to seven minutes (removes the acid), known as Cowboy Coffee. Whatever you choose, use about two heaping tablespoons of coffee per quart of water.

Turn Your Bathroom into a Home Spa!

The first time you do a coffee enema, plan forty-five minutes to an hour of uninterrupted time so you do not feel rushed. After you have done a few, you will discover the whole process only takes about 30 minutes.

  1. Put a towel on the floor, and grab a pillow for your head. Turn on some music or listen to a book on tape. Get comfy; make sure the room is warm and cozy. Some people even light some aromatic candles.
  2. Pour the strained, room temperature coffee into your enema bag or bucket. Use one to two quarts per bag.
  3. Tighten the clip on the hose so that the liquid doesn’t run out of the bag or bucket, and hang it 18-24 inches above you. You can hang it on the bathroom or shower door if that’s convenient. Make sure it is not hung three to four feet above your head! Gravity will force the liquid into your body too quickly, which is painful and not good for your colon.
  4.  Lie on your back, head on a pillow. Put coconut oil or non-petroleum jelly on the small tube that goes into your rectum–be generous! Then gently insert tube, remembering to breathe. Unclip, and let the strained coffee flow into your colon.
  5.  Massage your colon and take deep breaths, allowing the liquid to bag or bucket to slowly empty into your body. If possible, retain coffee solution for five-ten minutes. If you are caffeine sensitive, as many of my clients are, retain the coffee for just one to two minutes. You will still receive all the benefits without suffering from post-coffee-enema jitters.
  6. When you feel a cramp, get up and use the toilet, and let your body flush. It may take a few minutes for your colon to release, so be patient.
  7.  Now you are going to flush your colon THREE times with pure, warm water, to which you may decide to add 1/4 teaspoon of trace minerals or a few drops of chamomile oil. These water flushes are VERY IMPORTANT! If you skip this step, your liver will not have an opportunity to completely dump, and you will retain too much caffeine in your system.
  8.  You may choose to add two-four ounces of wheat grass to the water in your last bag. This is extremely nourishing for the nervous system, and alkalizing as well.
  9.  You did it! To complete, create an electrolyte implant of two-four ounces of water with one packet or tablet of a sugar-free electrolyte. Use your baby ear syringe to implant this mixture into your rectum.

The Natural Pain Relief Blog I Hope You Never Need

I hope you never need the natural pain relief tools you are about to discover. I did not know how desperately I would need them until this month! Since personal experience is usually how I acquire and test information, I can tell you that this May was a gold mine. Tripping and falling unceremoniously over my vacuum cleaner resulted in a torn ligament in my left ankle and three broken bones in my right ankle. And, as the orthopedist told me in the Emergency Room, “That right ankle will need surgery — pins, plates, the whole thing.”

Going through surgery has been one of my greatest fears. With my sensitivities,  I was afraid that a drug interaction would be the end of me, or at least a re-play of one of my childhood scenarios — doctors rallying around, trying to revive me from my latest allergic reaction. I have had serious reactions to pain killers in the past, and now I manage dental work with natural pain relief. (I also have a great dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Rhode.)

My wonderful doctor, Dr. Julia T. Hunter, communicated clearly to the anesthesiologist and surgeon. Together, they came up with an anesthesia plan that she felt would be safe for me, which included general anesthesia and a nerve block. The good news is I survived surgery! My ankle will be healthy and sound in about six weeks. Though I was not prescribed post-surgery antibiotics, a big dose of antibiotics was included in my IV during surgery.

Normally I handle pain well, but this post-surgical pain kicked my butt! I was miserable. Pain killers worked, but exacted a huge price. After a few days of using them, I was shaky, anxious, achy and depressed. One day I could not stop crying. Luckily, thanks to the advice of experts in the field of pain control and natural pain relief, I learned some tricks that I will to pass on to you. The following remedies are making a big difference in my comfort, sanity and attitude. Even though my ankle has a long way to go, I feel like myself again.

Natural Pain Relief Does Exist

I am taking quite a few supplements now for immune support, and will share those with you next week. These are the ones I am using for natural pain relief:

  1. CBD: Medical cannabis is nothing short of a miracle when it comes to pain relief. Many of my clients who have used medical cannabis for everything from arthritis pain to insomnia to immune issues, but I had never tried it myself. CBD is the part of the cannabis without psychotropic effects. For pain, one needs to generally use a product that has some THC added to the CBD to really make a difference. The product I use is a concentrate in a syringe, and I put one drop under my tongue three times daily. If you are over 18 and have a legitimate medical reason to use CBD, it is not hard to get a license and find a dispensary that will deliver to you. I will be writing more about this in the future!
  2. Circumen: Tumeric is known for being anti-inflammatory, as well as being a strong immune support and pain reliever. I have been taking 3-4 Curcumen-Evail from Designs for Health, and noticed the difference in my pain level within hours.
  3. Bromelain: I have also been taking one bromelain capsule 3-4 times a day in water on an empty stomach. This enzyme dissolves inflammation and therefore, leads to pain relief. I have a very sensitive stomach, but this doesn’t cause any upset.

Healing the Gut

Healing the gut is part of any good natural pain relief plan. Probiotics post-surgery are a must, and I have been taking them twice a day. I also began with enemas within two days of surgery. I had a table built that is the same height as my toilet, to avoid the need to get up and down to do the enema. This was life-saving!

On the Sunday following my Friday afternoon surgery, I woke up shaking, with the worst headache and all-over nerve pain. My body was rebelling from the drugs. I did my first enema and instantly felt better. I used coffee to cleanse my liver and wheat grass to nurture my traumatized nervous system. Then I made sure to take lots of salt, electrolytes and minerals to replenish what had been washed away. I also began to drink 4-6 ounces of aloe vera juice daily, as well as CALM magnesium, to loosen my bowels. Constipation is one of the unfortunate effects of medication, especially pain killers and anesthesia.

First, Clean the Cupboard

Before any cleansing begins, purge sugar, dairy products, junk food, candy, cookies and bread from your kitchen. It can be impossible to resist reaching for that one last vanilla wafer late at night, if the box is anywhere in sight. My latest book, It Takes Guts To Be Happy! Here is a game plan for success on a body cleansing Detox Weekend:

  1. Do Not Get Hungry: Drink at least 2 quarts of green vegetable juice each day. No fruit juice. Fruit will spike your blood sugar and slow your metabolism. Make your own, or treat yourself to freshly made organic juice from a local juice bar or health food store.
  2.  Blend A Protein Drink: If your energy lags, a protein shake made with non-dairy, sugar-free protein powder and almond or rice milk will perk you up without interfering with the cleansing process.
  3.  Take Care of Your Lymph: dry skin brush at least twice a day, and gently bounce on a rebounder or trampoline. (Both my books have directions for dry skin brushing.)
  4.  Clean Your Colon: Book a professional colonic or do an enema. Toxins that are released into the liver and the colon from the detoxification process need to be removed. Plus, colon cleansing will reduce or eliminate the headaches, body aches and brain fog that may occur during fasting.
  5.  Splurge on a massage or lymphatic therapy session. To create that home spa feeling, have a traveling massage come to your house.
  6.  Quiet the Mind: While fasting, one’s attention naturally turns inward. Give yourself time to read, journal, meditate, and dream.
  7.  Heavenly Bathing: Create ambiance in your home spa. Light candles, turn on soft music and add Epsom salts to water as hot as you can stand. Soak and let it all go.
  8. Get Sleep: Most people do not get the 7-8 hours of sleep necessary to recharge the nervous system and the adrenals. Sleep is free, yet it is one of the most effective beauty treatments on the planet.

To break your fast, eat a yummy salad with avocado and lemon dressing, or enjoy a cup of hot vegetable soup. Over the next few days, add fresh organic protein, and digestible foods such as sweet potatoes and winter squash. How many days can you go without sugar, caffeine or dairy? Many of my clients let go of these foods completely after juice fasts. They do not want anything to spoil how great they feel!
